French Polynesia, with its breathtaking landscapes and unique lifestyle, attracts many expats each year. However, settling in this overseas territory requires a good understanding of the local healthcare system and choosing the right insurance to meet your needs.
French Polynesia has its own health insurance system, separate from mainland France. The local health insurance scheme, managed by the Caisse de Prévoyance Sociale (CPS), covers permanent residents and employees. To benefit from this coverage, you must register with the CPS, usually through your employer or as a self-employed individual.
While healthcare is largely covered by this scheme, out-of-pocket expenses can occur, especially in the private sector. The CPS coverage is generally adequate, but it may not be sufficient for expats needing specialized care or medical evacuation.
Given the limitations of the local system, many expats opt for supplementary health insurance, or even international coverage. Local insurance plans are usually tailored to the realities of living in French Polynesia but often only cover care within the territory. International insurance, on the other hand, provides coverage abroad and in situations requiring medical evacuation to France or other countries for specialized treatments.
To make the right choice, it’s important to assess your specific needs. If you plan to travel frequently outside of French Polynesia or want coverage for treatments not available locally, an international insurance plan is often recommended.
French Polynesia has healthcare facilities, mainly concentrated on the island of Tahiti. The main medical facility is the Centre Hospitalier de Polynésie Française (CHPF) in Papeete. This public hospital provides general medical services, surgery, maternity care, as well as more specialized treatments such as cardiology and neurology.
However, in the more remote islands of the archipelago, medical facilities are limited, often consisting of small clinics or health centers providing basic care. In case of emergencies or treatments requiring advanced equipment, evacuation to Tahiti or even to France may be necessary.
Good to know: If you are an expat, check with your insurance provider to ensure your plan covers medical evacuation, as these costs can become very high.
